1910s German Gold-Plated Curb-Link Guard Chain with Jugendstil Shield Slider set with Red Gemstone

€85.00

A stylish German guard chain composed of closely fitted gold-plated curb links and fitted with a geometrically shaped Jugendstil slider. Formed as an angular shield with smoothly faceted planes, the slider is enriched with concentric die-struck borders and an applied laurel-leaf motif. At its centre, a small faceted red glass stone is bezel-set within an open circular filigree surround, providing a vivid point of colour against the warm gilded surface. Its crisp geometry, ordered symmetry and classical laurel ornament exemplify the highly stylised Jugendstil perfected by Pforzheim’s jewellery manufacturers, enriched by the Louis XVI Revival vocabulary that became increasingly fashionable during the 1910s.

This type of chain was designed as a ladies watch chain to be worn around the neck, with a central slider to create different ways to style it. It was mainly used to suspend a small ladies watch from the bottom clasp.

This chain measures 77,5 cm in total length, and features a swivel clasp for your watch.

In very good antique condition! No major visible dents or scratches. The gold-plating on the chain itself is mostly worn, but barely noticeable because of the brass base material. The slider is in perfect condition! Swivel clasp functions perfectly. Slider is sturdy. Fully cleaned, and ready to wear!
