A finely constructed German guard chain, made by the Pforzheim firm Friedrich Speidel during the final years of the Belle Époque. Crafted from gold-plated brass, the chain features exceptionally fine machine-made links, reflecting the rapidly advancing chain-manufacturing techniques developed in Pforzheim during the early 20th century. The chain is fitted with an enclosed heart-shaped slider, centred with a delicate seed pearl set within a radiating star setting, lending an understated decorative accent to the otherwise refined and elegant design. The restrained silhouette and delicate proportions are highly characteristic of German jewellery produced dating the Belle époque, at a moment when long guard chains and sautoirs had become an essential element of fashionable dress.
This type of chain was designed as a ladies watch chain to be worn around the neck, with a central slider to create different ways to style it. It was mainly used to suspend a small ladies watch from the bottom clasp.
