A richly decorated German gold-plated locket, formed as a lozenge and framed by bold openwork scrolls extending towards the suspension ring. Its front is engraved with a flowing arrangement of clover forms and stems, set with three vivid green glass stones and a cluster of three milky white opals. Scalloped linework encloses the composition, while broad fields of closely worked, diagonally hatched texture lend the surface a naturalistic character and contrast beautifully with the polished ornament. The locket opens to reveal two circular compartments, each retaining its original frame for a photograph or personal memento. Its combination of naturalistic motifs, coloured stones and architectural scrollwork is characteristic of the richly layered Historicist jewellery produced in Germany during the 1880s.
The pendant measures: 2,8 x 2,3 cm
In near perfect Antique condition, no major visible dents or scratches. Some minor wear on the gold-plating which is barely noticeable. Fully cleaned and ready to wear!
